How to Become an Interior Decorator

Home >> Career Search Article Directory >> How to Become an Interior Decorator

Interior DecoratorInterior decorators use their highly-developed sense of style and taste to make homes, offices, and other interiors look and feel good. Assignments may vary from elegant business interiors to the elaborate and artistic décor of wealthy homes, but the same processes are involved.

You meet with your client, discuss their design needs, and produce sketches which may include paint, wallpaper, furniture, carpets, and other decorative elements. With the designs agreed you proceed to completion of the actual decoration. You can work freelance, or for an interior decoration company. You may also specialize in, for example, domestic or industrial interiors.

What Skills do Interior Decorators need?

You will require good design skills and excellent communication skills. Guiding clients towards effective decoration schemes will not always be easy, so tact and patience will go a long way. You will also need an extensive knowledge of the elements of decoration, such as paints and fabrics, and the practical skills to undertake the actual decoration.

What Training is Required to be a Interior Decorator?

Unlike interior designers, interior decorators are not required to meet any training standards before working. You can, however, increase your skill base by undertaking a college program to develop both your aesthetic and technical abilities.

Not only will this make you a better interior decorator, it can inspire confidence in potential clients. There is a lot to learn and even if you have decorated successfully on an amateur basis you may be surprised by just how much more a true professional has to know.

What is my Job Outlook as an Interior Decorator?

This is a career where your success will depend very much on your individual abilities and, as you may well be self-employed, you can expect much of your business to come via client recommendations. There is always work for interior decorators and your talent, training, and business acumen will influence how much of it comes your way.
