If you are planning a career in IT, one of the areas that you could beinterested in is systems programming, specifically UNIX programming -that is, writing and maintaining programs that allow the different parts of complex computer installations to work well together.

This is highly technical programming, and demands understanding of the different hardware and software technologies that come together to make a system work. Much of this co-ordination is executed by the operating system, and in a complex installation, the usual operating system to be used is UNIX.

UNIX Programming Experts Know the System

UNIX programming requires you to understand the underlyingprinciples behind each part of a system - the differing functions ofthe hardware, the networking systems and in some cases the differentapplications that are on the system, particularly if these applications are database based.

UNIX is a very flexible operating system with a particular facility to allow complex networking and to allow different platforms to work together, but in order to work well in a complex installation, much of this has to be tailor made for specific situations, and this would be your function as a UNIX programmer.

Find your best Training Path for UNIX programming

Training in UNIX programming often involves a degree in ComputerScience or some related topic, giving you the background knowledge ofthe technologies you are going to be dealing with. You may learn UNIXprogramming in your degree program, or you may take one of the trainingcourses that are available from reputable UNIX programming training providers.

If you are doing UNIX programming you are one of a specialized breed,and although there is a continuing demand for this kind of IT professional, it is not likely to expand as fast as some of the technician jobs in IT. However, once a systems programmer always a systems programmer, and you are likely to have both job satisfaction and a continuous career in UNIX programming.
