Careers for Games Design

There are many openings for careers for games designers, but the competition is fierce, so you will have to do some real preparation if you want to enter this job market.

Careers for games designers usually start by acquiring a set of skills that is used by the games production team.  There are a number of skills areas in the team, including the games programmers - they usually program in C++, Java or Visual Basic; testers, who are usually skilled games players who work on contract to each game as it is developed. 

The design team includes the Lead designer, who operates as the team leader; level designers who are given responsibility for specific areas in the game.  They in turn will work with the graphic designers for the visuals, sound engineers and with the written designers, who are responsible for any dialog in the game, and manuals and help systems.

Programs for Design Skills 

Careers for games design means that you will have to acquire the basic design skills, usually by operating as a graphic designer or as a programmer, and maybe prove yourself to be creative in terms of new ideas or particularly good at team skills.  There are many educational programs available, so take a look at ones that are aimed at careers for games designers - these can help you to gain the skills you need, and also to get that really important first job.

Out of all the careers for games designers, the top position is lead designer.  Often this is the person who has the vision of the complete game, and you need real experience to be able to lead a whole team of designers, so it takes time to get there.  But if you are good enough, this is where you could make your mark.
