Engineering Management, Applied ManagementMany graduate students in advanced engineering choose to work towards a Ph.D. in Applied management & Decision Sciences with Specialization in Engineering Management. The field of engineering management is expected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which adds that "opportunities for obtaining a management position will be best for workers with advanced technical knowledge and strong communication skills."

Job Responsibilities

Engineering management positions involve strong technical knowledge of the field along with an ability to multitask and lead projects. A day in the life of an engineering manager might involve:

  • Communicating with higher levels of management, contractors, or suppliers
  • Creating detailed schematics and plans for research or products
  • Supervising other managers and workers in processing, operations, or quality assurance functions

Career Opportunities

Workers in engineering management may find careers in industrial plants, or in research and development offices. Applied management careers are also possible with the degree. A typical course in applied management might include the following tasks:
  • Faculty-guided research based on the student's interests or engineering focus
  • Research-based programs including face-to-face residencies
  • Mixed-model programs requiring both online courses and research
Engineering managers earn an average of $97,630, according to the BLS. Semiconductor and other electronic component manufacturing managers earned the most, at $116,400. While no degree program can guarantee a particular salary or career, education may be a critical aspect of the hiring process for employers who prefer or require prior training.
