Industrial Engineering Technology
Home >> Articles >> Engineering Careers >> Industrial Engineering Technology The production phase is essential to the cars, electronics, and toys we use and rely on every day. Industrial engineering technology is used to ensure that everything runs smoothly from beginning to end of any industrial manufacturing process. Industrial engineers can be in charge of personnel, production, or machinery; when efficiency is important to the process, industrial engineers use their talents to optimize production.
Industrial engineer technicians work behind the scenes in factories, stores, repair shops, and offices. They study the personnel and equipment for efficient use, and use industrial engineering technology to plan and implement workflow.
A day in the life of an industrial engineer might involve:
- Preparing a layout of machinery and equipment
- Planning efficient workflow from station to station
- Creating statistical studies for workflow or personnel
- Analyzing production costs for a new budget
About 69,000 industrial engineering technicians were employed in 2004, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Industrial engineering technicians make an average of $43,590 a year. Industrial engineering technicians working with semiconductors made $40,020 a year. While no degree or certificate program can guarantee a particular salary or career, it is advisable to seek training in a field where employees prefer or require it.
Courses in an Industrial Engineering degree or certificate program might include:
- Theory of Design
- Facilities Planning
- Quality Assurance Systems
- Production Systems Control
Industrial engineers can typically be found within industrial plants, though large repair shops, stores, and offices may present opportunities.
