As the name implies, a distance learning PhD is a doctoral degree that you obtain through some form of distance learning, usually over the internet. All distance learning means is that you are not in the same physical location as your instructor or fellow students. How Does a Distance Learning PhD Differ From One Obtained at a Traditional Campus?

Therefore you can keep your current job, meet your family obligations, and still make the time to earn your PhD.

But be careful! Do not be fooled by fake online "diploma mills" claiming to be respectable institutions. Since this degree requires so much time and effort, you need to ensure that whatever program you choose to attend is truly legitimate. Research a school's accreditation and credentials before enrolling. Check with the U.S. Department of Education if you have any doubts. Look at the school's faculty: what are their backgrounds, are they respectable, will they be able to help you do your original research? Finally, look into professional organizations in your field and find out their views on your chosen school.
