What Is Long Distance Learning?

Long distance learning, sometimes called e-learning or distance education, is any learning that occurs when the student and professor are in different geographical locations. It is accomplished through the internet, computers, video, television, email, and numerous other means.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Long Distance Learning?

Tuition costs can be lower through distance education, although you need to be careful before paying any fees that you have enrolled at a respectable, accredited institution.

The biggest advantage is convenience – no more commuting or relocating to attend the program of your choice, the ability to continue working full-time while pursuing your education, and a flexible schedule to suit your unique needs.

But you must be disciplined! You need to put in the same effort without having anyone standing over your shoulder. No one will know if you don't read or watch the latest lecture. Some online courses have more assignments to compensate for the lack of classroom time. But you need to take the initiative to get the most out of your long distance learning experience.

Are you comfortable learning over a computer? Some employers, especially in technical fields, respect online learning more than traditional schooling. But if using a computer makes you nervous then distance education may not be the best fit for you.

If you need face-to-face time with your instructor or fellow students, then you should take that into account as well.

But for some people, the ease and convenience of long distance learning far outweighs any possible cons, and instead becomes the best way for them to earn a degree, diploma, or train in new skills. The possibilities of long distance learning today are endless, covering all educational levels in almost every subject matter.
