E-Learning - Distance Learning - Online LearningWhat Is E-Learning?
"Classroom" content can be delivered over the internet, through audio or videotape, satellite broadcast, interactive TV, CD-ROM or other software, or many other specialized multi-media programs. It is considered a type of distance learning, and differs from online education only in that e-learning doesn't necessarily have to take place over the internet, although it usually does. Pros and Cons of E-Learning
The pros and cons of E-learning are somewhat intertwined. First, you need to be more careful to choose a respectable school. Several online programs are nothing more than "diploma mills" – false institutions that take your money and give you a worthless degree. Therefore you need to research any program before enrolling to ensure it has been fully accredited by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Check with the regional accreditation association if you have any doubts about the program. You also want to know how long your particular program has offered e-learning courses. Choose one that has been around for at least a little while, or they could still be working out the technical kinks in their program and this could hurt your educational opportunities. A potential con comes from people who do not have decent computer skills. E-learning should be easy enough for everyone to do it, but you want to check out what your program requires and make sure you have enough computer savvy to participate. You also need a fast internet connection. Dial-up connections can't handle most video footage. Finally, an additional pro is the wealth of opportunities out there for e-learners. Programs exist in most fields across many educational levels. Just choose the program that best meets your needs. |
