Our daily lives have changed so much in recent decades that many would-be students find themselves unable to attend school because they simply cannot find the time. Working a full eight hours and then commuting to a university can often wipe out an entire day, leaving little time for anything else.

As a result, online programs in universities and colleges have grown in popularity at a rapid pace. Online university programs solve the problem of being in two places at the same time, and have enabled many students to advance their lives through online learning. 

The Challenges of Distance Learning Programs

The software used to deliver online university programs has become a major industry, and in the early years online content was stilted and lacked the depth of classroom learning. This gained online programs a somewhat poor reputation and for a while the degrees earned online were thought to be of a lesser caliber than those earned in a traditional university. Now software is so advanced that it can lock your computer during a test so that you can't search on the Internet for answers, and some schools are even considering cameras so that students can be recorded to avoid cheating.

As online university programs evolved, many traditional colleges and universities have complemented their curriculum by giving students the option to take some courses online rather than in the classroom -- even the haughtiest of Ivy League schools have bought into the revolution of distance learning. 

Are Online University Programs Better?

Online education content can now be delivered through an astounding variety of formats from Internet lectures to online chatrooms, to podcasts on your iPod. Often, the content is nearly identical to what is being delivered in the classroom and some students find it more engaging, in addition to being more convenient. Says Tristam Wyatt, director of online learning at prestigious Oxford University, the "connection can be more profound than a real class."
