If your interests lie at the intersection of two fields or if you would like to pursue multiple areas of interest at once, a dual degree program might be the answer for you. As the name implies, dual degree programs involve earning two degrees at one time.

Ways to Get a Dual Degree

The first is a joint degree program in which you earn dual degrees, but in which the coursework and requirements overlap so that the overall time you spend in school is less than it would be if you pursued the degrees separately.

For instance, you might choose to combine law and business school so that at the end of a four-year dual degree program you earn both a J.D. and an M.B.A., rather than taking the five years it would to earn the degrees one at a time.

Another method is simply to enroll in two degree programs at the same time, typically at the same institution. In this case, the amount of time required to complete the degrees is not necessarily shorter, but by combining programs you can enjoy the benefits that come with combining different types of learning. For instance, a degree in public health and a degree in economics earned simultaneously might lead you to explore interesting issues at the point where the fields overlap.

The time it takes to earn dual degrees depends on the types of degrees you are earning, but whatever type of dual degree program you undertake, the education you'll get by combining two fields of study is likely to be that much richer.
