Master's DegreeIn the United States, master's degrees are degrees awarded in recognition of the completion of a program of graduate (or post-bachelor's degree) studies.

Programs can vary; depending on the type of study you undertake a master's degree typically takes between nine months and three years to earn.

In some cases, master's degree programs can be combined, so that you earn two master's degrees in four or five years. A bachelor's degree is the typical prerequisite for a master's degree , but in some cases specific undergraduate coursework or several years of a specific type of work experience are also required.

Types of Master's degree

There are two main types of master's degree programs: those that prepare you for further academic study – typically a doctorate degree in the same field – or those that prepare you for a profession. Master's degree programs designed to prepare you for further study are often built into PhD programs,
so that the first few years of study result in a master's degree and then count toward your doctoral studies as well.

Professional master's degrees are sometimes referred to as "terminal degrees," and types of degrees that fall under the category of professional master's degrees include MBAs (Master of Business Administration) MPPs (Master of Public Policy) MFA (Master of Fine Arts).

In fact, you can earn a master's degree in an incredible number of different fields, with the result that whatever the type of career you're looking to advance in, there's most likely a master's degree program to help you do that.

There's also most likely a master's degree program designed to fit your life. Many programs are set up on tradition full-time student models. But others are designed to be completed while you're working, with courses offered either online, in the evenings, or independent study.
