How to Become a Diesel Mechanic

Home >> Career Search Article Directory >> How to Become a Diesel Mechanic

Diesel MechanicDiesel engines endure a tremendous amount of strain and use since they are the workhorses of the transportation and shipping industries. Diesel-powered engines haul huge loads around the world every day. Without them, our precious global economy would collapse. That’s why the diesel mechanic’s job is so incredibly important.

What is a Diesel Mechanic?

A diesel mechanic (also known as a diesel technician), is responsible for making sure that engines run smoothly and efficiently.

If an engine breaks down, they are there to fix it by replacing or repairing any broken parts. However, most diesel technicians spend the bulk of their time doing routine maintenance and preventative care. Before a cross country trek, for example, a diesel technician might check out an 18-wheeler to make sure that it’s up to the challenge.

Becoming a Diesel Mechanic

Although many technicians received on-the-job training, the Department of Labor recommends completing a diesel engine training program since newer vehicles are becoming increasingly complex. In addition, many technicians get certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

Employers recognize this as the standard for diesel engine expertise. After completing your formal training, you should seriously consider completing this certificate program as well (although you’ll need to demonstrate at least two years of hands-on experience first).

Job outlook for Diesel Mechanic

The Department of Labor predicts that job growth for diesel mechanics will match the average for other industries over the next several years. In some areas, it might actually grow a little faster as more and more over-sized vehicles switch to the diesel engine standard. You can expect to make a median salary of $16.00 an hour for a standard 40-hour work week.
