When you go to the ballet or an art gallery, you are enjoying the fine arts. When you go to a restaurant you are enjoying the culinary arts. The culinary arts refer to all aspects of food preparation and production. Professional chefs, cooks, production assistants, caterers, banquet coordinators and pastry chefs are all practitioners of the culinary arts.
Although it is not necessarily required to enter the profession, the most competitive candidates for jobs in the culinary arts hold a diploma or certificate from one of the many culinary arts schools around the globe.
Culinary Arts Schools
In culinary arts school, you learn the basics of food science, nutrition, chemistry and food production. You may spend quite a bit of time studying the chemical reactions that take place when a certain ingredient is heated, boiled or frozen and how that will affect the total outcome of the dish.
There are a couple of different emphases you can pursue in culinary arts school. For example, pastry chefs will focus on baking breads, rolls and sweets as well as learning how to spin sugar and make candy. Le Cordon Bleu chefs concentrate on classical French cooking. There are a variety of different concentrations available at culinary arts schools.
The Future for Culinary Arts School Graduates
Because competition is keen for chefs at high-end restaurants, people with a culinary arts school degree or certificate will have an advantage over candidates who lack this type of education. Job openings for chefs, cooks and food production assistants will continue to grow because the current trend is that people are vacationing more often and dining out on a more regular basis.
