How to become a Computer ScientistHow do computers work exactly? Where is the information stored? Is there a way to make certain applications faster? Can we make this component smaller?

These and other questions are what computer science seeks to answer on a daily basis.

What is Computer Science?

Broadly speaking, computer science is the study of computer processes, algorithms, software, and hardware. As a computer scientist, your job is to figure out how to make computers faster, safer, and more reliable. It sounds like an easy enough charge, but have you seen some of the newer computers? They’re incredibly sophisticated and complex machines.

Qualifications for a Computer Scientist

Most major universities offer computer science as a major. Many vocational or computer schools do as well. A degree in this or a related field is the bare minimum most employers will accept if you apply to become a computer scientist.

Through your training, you will learn everything there is to know about programming, design, software/hardware, networking, the Internet, and advanced mathematics. In essence, you’ll become an expert in computers. Not surprising.

Job Outlook for a Computer Scientist

Also not surprising is the job outlook for this specialized field. Computers have become indispensable fixtures in our lives. We rely on them day in and day out. Can you imagine a single day where you did not directly or indirectly use a computer? That would mean no banking, air conditioning, refrigerated food, hot water, or gasoline. And of course, you would not be able to use email.

The point is, computer-related job openings are expected to be plentiful according to the U.S. Department of Labor. So if you enjoy studying how and why things work, want a secure job, and consider yourself somewhat technical, you should seriously think about becoming a computer scientist.
