Advertising Manager Whether you're watching a movie, driving to work, or eating lunch, chances are, you're surrounded by advertising, logos, and sales pitches.

Marketing and PR have become such permanent fixtures in our daily lives that most of the time, we aren't even aware of them. However, they still work. Done correctly, a commercial, billboard, logo, sign, poster, or ad can have a lasting effect. It's the job of an advertising manager to make sure it's done correctly.

What is an advertising manager?

An advertising manager basically coordinates ad campaigns for an organization or business. They supervise the sales, product development, advertising, and market research that help make products successful. It's an extremely challenging job because you must stay one step ahead of a fickle and desensitized public. Making sure that your product gets seen is a full-time job that requires a range of interrelated skills.

That's why most employers prefer to hire those with a background in advertising, journalism, marketing, consumer behavior, market research, communications, or art. If you do not have a bachelors degree in one of these fields, you should strongly consider going back to school. There is not a lot of room for trial and error in the world of advertising.

Job outlook for advertising managers

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the job prospects for advertising managers are excellent. Every year, advertising real estate becomes more competitive. Global markets, changing trends, and increased productivity translate to very high stakes.

Consequently, companies are willing to pay handsomely for true marketing and advertising skills. Openings will grow more quickly than the national average for other occupations. You can expect to make a median salary of $60,000 a year.
